Dr. Tyrone M. Bates, Jr. (He, Him, His)

Dr. Tyrone Michael Bates, Jr. is from Kansas City, Kansas by way of Chicago, Illinois.  He is married to his wife of 21 years, LaJasmia (Jazzee) a Registered Nurse in Kansas. They share six beautiful children, La'Shana, Tyrone III, Tamar, Trinity, Tamia & Emmanuel. 

 

Dr. Bates is the CEO and Founder of True Empowering, LLC., a consulting firm operating nationally for the past ten years that provides tailored solutions for growing organizational culture and communication across cultural lines. 

 

Dr. Bates is a graduate of Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, KS. He attended Northwest Missouri State University while on a full-ride Cross Country & Track & Field Scholarship. Dr. Bates is a 2002 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry as well as his Educational Specialist Degree.  He holds a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from Pittsburgh State University. Tyrone earned his Educational Doctorate degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 2012. 

 

Tyrone taught biology and chemistry at his Alma Mater, in Kansas City, KS; An Academic Coach with a college access program, and seven years as a district and building administrator in pre-K-12 public school districts. Dr. Bates currently serves on the advising board for The B.L.O.C. (Brothers Liberating Our Community), The Jegna Klub, and KC REI Alumni. He is an active member of 24 years of his fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. where he serves as advisor for an undergraduate chapter and a member of the educational committee. 

 

Dr. Bates is a visionary leader dedicated to empowering individuals and organizations to reach their full potential. As the CEO of True Empowering, LLC, he brings a wealth of expertise in driving transformative change and fostering inclusive environments. Driven by a deep commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, Dr. Bates inspires those around him to challenge the status quo and create meaningful impact. With his strategic mindset, exceptional leadership abilities, and unwavering passion for empowering others, Dr. Bates continues to pave the way for positive change and transformation in the realms of personal growth, organizational development, and social justice.

Tyrone believes that “all things” require respect and honor, because of the God that dwells within them.  He defines respect as allowing people to show up as an authentic original of themselves daily without judgment from others.

Dr. Trevor M. Bates (He, Him, His)

Dr. Trevor Mackenzie Bates was born and raised on the west side of Chicago, Trevor has a long history in academia.  Trevor grew up in an impoverished and high crime area of Chicago. His immediate family relocated to Kansas City, Kansas, when he was about 12 years old, to seek a better life.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Millikin University (IL), Master of Science in Kinesiology with a Sports Medicine concentration as a pre-doctoral fellow from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (IL), and Doctor of Health Sciences with a focus in Leadership and Organizational Behavior from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences (MO/AZ).

Dr. Bates has 20 years of progressive leadership roles (clinician, faculty member, clinical education coordinator, program director, department chair, dean, vice president and board member) served as the vice president of academic affairs, dean of faculty and professor of health sciences at Mercy College of Ohio, and most recently served as the President of Wilmington College.

Outside of higher education, Dr. Bates currently chairs the Athletic Training Section and is a Joint Board member of the State of Ohio’s Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Athletic Trainers (OTPTAT) Board. He recently completed a partial term as vice president of the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association (GLATA) and is a founding member of the Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association (OATA) Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He currently serves as vice chair of the Board of Directors for United Church Homes Inc. (UCH) and is a member of the UCH Management Inc. board. Dr. Bates serves as national co-chair of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access Task Force.

Dr. Bates, who describes himself as “a person of strong Christian faith,” is a lifetime Midwesterner, being a native Chicagoan (IL) and spending more than a decade in both Kansas City (KS) and the great state of Ohio. He is the second oldest of eight biological siblings with several additional siblings via marriage.  He is a former high-school scholar-athlete (wrestler and distance runner) and brings an energetic spirit to all he does. He is married to Kassandra Bates, a utilization management case manager at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The couple lives in Wilmington with their two sons, Ethan and Liam.
